Negotiating Terms
At this stage I speak with the client to determine their needs and establish whether I am able to meet those needs. We discuss the client’s manuscript, scheduling and deadlines. Then I choose to take on the project, or reject it.
Editing Sample
Assuming I’ve accepted the project the client will send me their manuscript immediately, which I return to them within a few day with a sample of my services (typically about 10 pages). These first 10 pages are free, so that if the client is dissatisfied with my sample they can terminate the contract completely free of charge. After reviewing the sample of my work the client meets with me for 30 minutes to review the manuscript, address concerns, and answer questions. This step serves the purpose of fine-tuning my approach to the manuscript in question and clarifying expectations on both sides. Client satisfaction is my top priority.
Copyediting
During this stage I go through the document page by page and line by line correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax, while making sure that your tone and voice are conveyed accurately. I also pay attention to the structure of your manuscript making changes to improve the overall flow and readability of your work.
Follow up meeting/Final review
After I’ve finished copyediting the client’s manuscript we then schedule a meeting to discuss some of the changes i made, some of the changes I didn’t make and why, various suggestions, and next steps. The clients should set aside an hour for this meeting.
End of the Contract
I expect payment to be made out in full at the end of the meeting. After I have received payment I will promptly send the client the editied version of their manuscript.
Terms of service
I became an independent contractor for the freedom and flexibility it provides. I set my own schedule and work at my own pace. That pace is typically about 200 pages per week, though some weeks I may do more, and occasionally less. However, since committing to much more than that limits my flexibility and demands more hours I charge an additional $ .50 for every 75 pages the client requires beyond that. (All page counts are based on size 12 font)
Unreasonable Demands & Out of Scope Work
Once work on a manuscript has begun I will not accept updated versions.
Demands for out of scope work (work outside the project parameters agreed upon at the beginning of our contract) may result in the termination of our contract. In such a case the client would be charged for any work already completed.
Credit and Acknowledgement
Beyond payment there are three ways that the client can show further appreciation for a job well done.
All of these are optional:
They could formally credit me for copyediting their book, including my name and the name of my company on their copyright or credit page.
They could send me a complementary copy of their book after it’s been published.
They could leave a positive review on my website.
Also, if your satisfied with my work please refer me to other authors in your circle.
